Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie, made Barbie as a powerful, optimistic, and type character model after realizing her daughter’s imagination was sparked by engaging paper dolls. Ruth’s son had access to toys which inspired him to be whatever he wanted to be–policeman, tradesman, or physician –his toys provided a slew of options. Thus, Ruth set out to inspire young women and to even the playing field between sexes.
